May 2, 2012: The Bearing Project’s Silent Auction Fundraiser at the Glover Mansion

Created by internationally-known Spokane artist Ildikó Kalapács in 2008, the original Bearing sculpture is a small bronze statue. Bearing celebrates the strength of women across the world. This sculpture depicts a woman carrying a man, to represent the burden that war places on the human spirit. Dispossessed women carry the weight of family and spousal responsibilities; bearing the physical and emotional load of the aftermath of war.

The public sculpture titled Bearing is proposed to be cast life-size and placed in a prominent location in the greater Spokane area. Bearing will be a gift to the community from the donors of the Bearing Public Sculpture Project Fund.

May 2010: I was invited by the progressive Central European University in Budapest to exhibit and lecture on my art in May of 2010. I chose the topic of gender issues as related to my art works.

October 17, 2009: I am participating in an art show at the Bemis Art Show at The Bemis Building: 55 South Atlantic Street, Seattle, on Saturday, October 17th from noon-10 p.m.

April 2008: Ildikó is working on two public art projects: One is a painting for the new Hospice of Spokane and the other one is also a painting for PPINW in Spokane. She will post the images on her website as soon as possible.

Ildikó was invited to participate in a cultural festival in Rácalmás, Hungary (June 30-July 2, 2007) where she is exhibiting some of her paintings. You can read an interview with her on the festival’s website (main page: sorry, only in Hungarian). The interview focuses the issue of identity and globalization.

March 2007: Ildikó was invited to a Hungarian art festival in Hungary from June 20th till July 15th. She is participating in an art exhibition which focuses on “identity” as a theme. It is curated by Mr. István Pálinkás who is an poet and art critic.

December 2006: Ildikó recently arrived home form her long business trip to her home country Hungary. She was one of the speakers and interviewees at the I. Traveling Exhibition of Visual Artists of Hungarian Origin.

She is currently exhibiting at two art galleries in Hungary (Szalóky Galéria, Muhely Galéria) and received three solo exhibition offers in Budapest. Also, the Hungarian Public Television is creating a documentary about her and her art, starting next year. The shooting will be in conjunction with her solo exhibition in her hometown Szeged. The film will include statements from a few Spokane area artists who had a great impact on her artistic development. The Hungarian Public Television’s Culture House show will promote her documentary before her first solo exhibition in Budapest.
